Complete Guide to EPF, VPF, and EPS Pension in India

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a statutory retirement savings scheme mandated by the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. Managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, EPF provides guaranteed sovereign interest and tax exemptions for millions of formal-sector salaried workers across India.

1. How the 12% Monthly Contribution Is Structured

Every month, a total equivalent of 24% of your Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (DA) is invested into retirement benefits:

2. The ₹2,50,000 Annual Contribution Tax Limit (Section 10(12))

Effective from April 1, 2021 (Budget 2021 amendment), the Government introduced a ceiling on tax-free interest earned on provident fund contributions:

Section 10(11) & Section 10(12) Rules:

  • If an employee's total contribution (EPF + VPF) exceeds ₹2,50,000 in a financial year, the EPFO maintains two separate ledgers: a Non-Taxable Contribution Account and a Taxable Contribution Account.
  • Interest earned on contributions up to ₹2.5 Lakh per year remains 100% tax-free.
  • Interest accrued on the portion of contributions exceeding ₹2.5 Lakh is added to your annual income and taxed at your marginal income tax slab rate under "Income from Other Sources".
  • Exception: For government employees or provident funds where the employer makes zero contribution, the tax-free limit is ₹5,00,000 per year.

3. What Is Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF)?

The Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) allows salaried employees to voluntarily allocate an additional portion of their Basic + DA (up to 88% extra, reaching a total of 100%) into their PF account. VPF offers substantial advantages:

4. EPS-95 Monthly Pension Formula

Upon reaching the age of 58 with at least 10 years of eligible service, employees qualify for a lifetime monthly pension under the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS-95):

Monthly Pension = [Pensionable Salary × Pensionable Service (Years)] ÷ 70

Because the statutory pensionable salary is capped at ₹15,000 per month and maximum service is capped at 35 years (plus 2 bonus years for completing 20+ years of service), the maximum standard EPS pension is currently around ₹7,500 per month.
