Understanding CTC vs. Gross Salary vs. In-Hand Salary
When evaluating an employment offer in India, the headline number stated on your offer letter is your Cost to Company (CTC). This figure represents the aggregate financial cost an organization allocates for hiring and retaining you over one year. However, your monthly bank credit (known as Take-Home or In-Hand Salary) is typically 15% to 30% lower than your CTC divided by 12.
1. The Three Layers of Indian Salary Architecture
| Salary Layer | What It Includes | Where It Goes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Cost to Company (CTC) | Gross Salary + Employer EPF (12%) + Employer Gratuity pool (4.81%) + Health Insurance premiums + Variable Bonus. | Total budget reserved by employer for your role. |
| 2. Gross Salary | Basic Pay + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + Special Allowance + Conveyance & Medical Allowances. | Listed at the top of your monthly payslip before any deductions. |
| 3. In-Hand (Net) Salary | Gross Salary minus Employee EPF (12%), Professional Tax (PT), and Income Tax (TDS). | Direct cash deposited into your bank account on salary day. |
2. Standard CTC Salary Slip Breakdown (Worked Example)
Let us examine how a standard ₹12,00,000 (12 LPA) CTC package is calculated across Indian private sector companies:
- Basic Salary (40% of CTC): ₹4,80,000 per year (₹40,000 / month).
- Employer EPF Contribution (12% of Basic): ₹57,600 per year (₹4,800 / month). Deducted from CTC.
- Employer Gratuity Contribution (4.81% of Basic): ₹23,088 per year (₹1,924 / month). Deducted from CTC.
- Annual Gross Salary: ₹12,00,000 − ₹57,600 − ₹23,088 = ₹11,19,312 (₹93,276 / month).
- Employee EPF Deduction (12% of Basic): ₹57,600 per year (₹4,800 / month). Deducted from Gross.
- Professional Tax (PT): ₹2,400 per year (₹200 / month). Deducted from Gross.
- Pre-Tax Take-Home Pay: ₹11,19,312 − ₹57,600 − ₹2,400 = ₹10,59,312 (₹88,276 / month).
- Income Tax TDS (New Regime FY 2025-26): ~₹68,640 per year (~₹5,720 / month).
- Final In-Hand Salary: ₹82,556 / month.
3. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Companies include mandatory statutory contributions that you do not immediately receive in cash. This includes Employer PF (12% of basic), Gratuity reserves (4.81% of basic), company insurance, and annual performance bonuses. Furthermore, Employee PF, Professional Tax, and Income Tax (TDS) are deducted from your gross pay before bank disbursement.
Under EPFO guidelines, statutory mandatory PF is capped at 12% of ₹15,000 basic salary (which equals ₹1,800 per month). If your employer allows capping contributions at ₹1,800 rather than 12% of your full basic, your monthly in-hand cash increases, though your retirement fund accumulates at a slower rate.
Under the Payment of Gratuity Act 1972, gratuity is payable only after you complete a minimum of 5 continuous years of service with the same employer. Even though employers deduct ~4.81% annually from your CTC as a reserve, you forfeit this amount if you leave the company before completing 5 years.
For FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26, the New Tax Regime provides a Standard Deduction of ₹75,000 for salaried employees and complete tax rebate under Section 87A for taxable income up to ₹7,00,000. Salaried individuals earning up to ₹7.75 Lakh pay ₹0 income tax under the New Regime.
